When I got my primers there were magnum cci 450's stacked with the regular 400's. Now I have 10,000 magnum and 2,000 regular, cant return the magnums. My question for someone who knows or uses magnum primers for 9mm.
My normal load is 4.6 gr w231 with 124 gr round nose fmj with a cci 400 primer. I checked all my reloading manuals no loads useing magnum primers for 9mm only 38 super. So anyone does or has done cci 450 primers w231 powder for 9mm?? |

I hope it doesn't suck for you as bad as it looks.... hopefully the above is a typo.... but... ummm... hate to break it to you.... 400 series CCI primers (400 & 450) are... SMALL RIFLE PRIMERS I'm thinking you wanted CCI "500" which are SMALL PISTOL PRIMERS.... |

Like above, I hope your numbers are messed up.
If you actually have Small Pistol Magnum Primers, they can work. I'm currently working my way through 1k of them (also CCI's) because a fella handed me the wrong box (and I didn't check it good enough). Just rework your load. The magnum primers will most likely cause your most accurate charge weight to be different than your current charge weight (at least that's what's happened to me with LPM/LP and SPM/SP). If you're really lazy and don't want to rework the load, you might be able to get away with using them as long as you aren't near max load (haven't used 231 and I'm not near my manuals right now). That's not what I'd do, but it is an option. In short, rework and be happy with your new load data. Next time it happens, you'll just have to adjust your charge weight and you'll be able to keep on trucking. That's a good thing if SPP become scarce during another ammo panic. Agree with the above.
Just rework loads for the mag primers. They usually take a smidge less powder to get the same results. I have done it with Tightgroup but not W231. Also Mag primers tend to be a little harder so your firing pin has to hit harder to detonate them. If you have a hamerless gun you may have an issue but it is highly unlikely. I have used SRP's in pistol rounds also in a pinch, haven't tried SPM's though. Hmmmm................ |
