can anyone recommend a dehumidifier for a rifle safe?

Dessicant works really well. I put two 450 gram boxes in my safe and it stays dry all year. I do reactivate them every 3 months in the oven. I have heard from a couple of gunsmiths that the electric type can cause damage to your guns.

Get a  Golden Rod.  I got mine from Brownell's.  I live in the humidity capitol of North America, and have never had any rust on my guns from having them stored in the safe.

I use desiccant packs for stuff not stored in the safe, like ammo cans.

ETA:  I've never heard about electric dehumidifiers "damaging" guns.  Maybe if you rested a wood stock directly on one for an extended period of time, it might cause some damage, maybe.  I've never heard of that happening, either.

Been using a golden rod for many years....no problems. VT is humid in the summer.

I use pounds of desiccant I got here on the EE. The Goldenrod is not a dehumidifier, but rather heats up the interior of the safe. This keeps condensation from occurring, by keeping the temp above the dew point. I have a 18inch Goldenrod. Overkill is better.

I've been cycling a metric crapload of dessicant in my safe for years (most of it graciously provided by WWoodworth).  But lately, I've found that Damp Rid does a fantastic job of sucking moisture out for very little money.  That, coupled with a dehumidifier in the basement works well for me.  The dehumidifier costs a lot to run, but I don't have much choice on that.

+1 on the Damp Rid

$5 gets you a couple buckets and they last a long time.  The one I'm using now I've used for 4 months, plenty of crystals left.

FWIW, I use Damp Rid in a small 14 gun safe.  I believe it was developed for basement owners...might be the reason it works so well in smaller confined spaces.
