I have Winchester model 61 that likes to extract two rounds after you rack the slide.
I haven't been able to take the gun apart, because I don't have a gun vise to safely hold the barrel. Short of buying one what can I do get it apart? I do have a normal bench vise but it is rather heavy and I don't feel comfortable using it for fear of damaging the rifle. |

I'm not sure where you are with this.
Extracting two rounds is not a barrel problem and you should not remove the barrel. If for some reason the barrel has to come off, you MUST use a professional gunsmiths barrel vise and an action wrench. Unless you really know your stuff, and have the correct tooling, don't try to remove the barrel. More likely, your problem is the cartridge cut off, part #8, is worn, weak, or defective. Here's an exploded view of the Model 61: http://www.stevespages.com/ipb-winchester-61.html Winchester Model 61 parts: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=7411 http://www.poppertsgunparts.com/cgi-bin/webdata/webdata_gunparts.cgi |

Wasn't trying to take the barrel off. Just clamp it down to hold the rifle. So that I can pull it apart.
It has a take down screw but once I take that off. I still can't pull it apart. The pdf manual I downloaded said to use a "suitable" vise to take the barrel receiver group from the stock guard group. This rifle belonged to my grandfather so I have no intentions of using improper tools. I'm just trying to see what I can do to take it apart. So I can find the problem and fix it. |

In that case, you pad the jaws of the vise you have.
There's very few times where a vise is TOO big. Don't grip the receiver, you can crush it. To grip the barrel, use pads of copper, lead, leather, or some of the polymer vise jaw pads from Brownell's. These synthetic jaw pads grip the work very tightly, better than most anything else. |
