Going to be reloading 45 colt for my new ruger blackhawk and had a couple questions.
I bought the Lee 4 die set with the FCD. Has anyone had any problems with this die swaging your lead bullets down when you crimp ? Was looking at buying some berry's plated bullets for plinking, Am i going to have a problem with crimping these since they do not have a crimp groove? Perhaps and taper crimp my work and hold them in place? I'll be using Unique, Clays, Bullseye, and Titegroup for my plinking loads. I need some reccomendations for some powder for magnum power loads, what are your favorites? saw 2400 looked popular in some manuals i have. Any other tidbits you all want to throw in would be helpfull, thanks. |

21 grains of 2400 with a 250 grain Hornady XTP and 26 grains of H110 with the 250 XTP have been my fav full power loads. H110 needs a magnum primer, the 2400 does not. Both of them I use a pretty heavy crimp.
ETA: For plinking loads I use 7 grains of W231 with 255g flat nose Xtreme plated bullets. Very light taper crimp on those. Super super accurate and fun to shoot. |
| You might want to consider some lead bullets, either the round nose flat point or semi-wadcutters. I use the Taffin standard load of 8 gr Unique behind a 255 gr RNFP (850 fps from 5 1/2" bbl) in my Colt and USFA single-action army pistols, these bullets are plenty accurate. I cast my own but also use Desperado Bullets or Laser Cast with good results. |

21.0-21.5gr 2400 is good for the 250gr XTP, which isn't rated real fast so it works out well. I use 9.5-10.0gr Unique for 250-255gr hardcast SWC or whatever lead bullet. For Ruger level loads H110/W296 and 'LilGun are great as well. I have the 4pc Lee die set for it and I've never had a problem, obviously make sure you have it set up correctly. |
