I'd like to start a tomahawk project in the next week or two and I can get a head in 4140 and 6150 steels. I'm wondering if there are any heat treating methods that would not require expensive ovens but still make a decent piece. Edge hardening with a torch? I don't want to make a show piece, but a truly functional hawk. I just don't have the money to invest in an oven now.
Which steel would make the best useable product? |
| I believe Buck still does heat treating at their factory. You can send in your item, how you want it done and they'll do it for a fee. Whole lot easier that setting up your own oven and process. Paul Bos has left Buck, but I'm sure they still do it by his methods. Give them a buzz and ask. |
Of the 2 steels listed, 6150 would be better IMHO. You can harden with an Oxy/Acetylene torch and quench in oil. Heat the section evenly to just above non-magnetic then do your quench. Then temper it in an oven, Kitchen oven will work but make sure it is cleaned of all oil unless you are single or want to be .
Buck used Paul Boss for heat treating for years and still uses the services but Paul has retired. I will make the same offer I have made before, if you want to send it to me with return postage I will put it in with my next batch and send it back to you. Chuck Richards |
