What is the heaviest bullet that I can load into a 5.56 case and still fit in the magazine?  I would prefer something solid (like FMJ) as opposed to hollowpoint, but I'll take what I can get.

ETA: Case capacity is not an issue because I will be using light loads.

Was.  Until recently when Berger unveiled the 82 grain HPBT.  A BC of .450, compared to their 80 grain VLD of .471.

What really amazes me is their 77 grain bullet is only .389.

Will the 82 stabilize in a 1/8 twist barrel?

Yes.  It is the same length as the 80s, only with a 77 "nosecone".  It is the ogive that determines if the bullet can be loaded to mag length. If the nosecone length is over 0.500", it is a single load bullet unless you have special magazines.  There are a few out there, one requires a different bolt stop and only holds 8 rounds.  Ok for CMP but impractical for most.
