What do you guys use to store and transport into the field?
The Helmet Hut or is there something better or cheaper? |

I store my Ops Cores in the a padded black shell it came with, I put my PVS-14 and NV accessories in a draw string bag and sit it in the helmet.
If im traveling I use a gym bag with a towel for padding, its free and does a great job IMO its easy to get carried away with over priced NV accessories. I think manufacturers know people who are spending $3-10k on goggles and $500-1500 on a helmet and $500+ on a mount know we have deep pockets and tend to market us a bunch of over priced crap we don't really need. |
| I've been using a SKD BBC2(Brain Bucket Carrier). I'm happy with it and the price was right enough. I don't mind using my gear hard, but since my helmets were kind of pricey too, I don't mind keeping unneeded damage at bay. This way it can be tossed in the bed since we sometimes roll deep at night, lol. |

At home, I store my helmet fully set up for use and where I can get it pronto. When it was in the safe, I couldn't get it fast enough about 4 times, so now it's convenient but not obvious to visitors or burglars.
When I take it someplace for work or fun, I remove the PVS-14 and stow that and the accessories and batteries in an old Pelican case inside the helmet. If I have to pack the equipment around, I usually keep it in an LBT-2054B waterproof bag to keep dust and dirt and water off my stuff, and I put that LBT bag inside of the most uninteresting outer bag that fits what I am doing. Might be a gym bag. Might be one of those cloth-like shopping bags. Might be a Hello Kitty backpack. But it sure as heck doesn't scream "tactical equipment" or "night vision gear inside" or "I am expensive and desirable". The 2054B shows up on eBay often.It is sized and shaped as if it is intended for helmets, but I don't know. Be careful to get one with a good zipper. Holes in used bags can be repaired with Aquaseal or with StaBond and scraps of w/p material. I wouldn't store my gear very long in a closed waterproof package of any kind without tossing in a dehumidifier pouch of some kind. |
| I bought a $25 or $20 padded motorcycle helmet bag off eBay. It will store two of the hard PVS14 cases, a Wendy helmet with Rhino II attached and a Skull Cap inside the helmet also with Rhino II attached with a bit of room to spare. It is NOT milspec by any means, but works great for me. |

It's perhaps not exactly what you're asking for, but the AWS Beavertail pack might be something to look into:

The AWS version is fairly affordable, the Multicam version without the strap kit (a bag full of straps and buckles to attach the pack to a plate carrier or RRV in a "QD" mode--the pack without the strap kit comes with built-in MOLLE loops for direct mounting the pack to a plate carrier, as well as padded shoulder straps to use the pack as a stand-alone pack) comes out to about $136, while the coyote version is even cheaper at about $120. While more expensive than some "dedicated" helmet bag options, it's also a well-sized small assault pack, that you can use to carry other equipment/items in, along with providing a carrying solution for your helmet that provides some (though it's definitely not a padded bag) protection that's easy to carry/pack when you're not wearing your helmet. You can also keep your NODs either in a small case inside the pack's main compartment, or tucked inside the helmet with the pack. There are also several other packs that have the "beavertail flap" for helmet storage as well, including, but not limited to the First Spear ECP and some of the TYR Tactical packs, and that are built in different sizes/for different purposes/features, but they all tend to start going up in price from the AWS version for a basic pack of modest but usable size (< 24 hours) that also has a built in helmet carriage option. Also, if/when you're wearing the helmet, the beavertail compartment makes an excellent pocket for storing other items you might want/need easy access to, including things like cold weather gear, oddly shaped, or other specialty items. ~Augee |

I splurged for the First Spear Helmet Hut. I figured why not. I use my gear, and it'll get bumps and scratches in use, but transport I want a lower profile than a camo helmet with gizmos attached hanging from my backpack. I would like to get my hands on a NOD Garage from US Palm though. They've been out of stock for a long time now.  I have the mini pelican case to store the PVS14 in when I toss it into my dufflebag or backpack for when we go riding on the ATVs and I think I'll need/want it later, but for simple runs out to the desert I still want the garage. Anyone have one they want to get rid of???

Augee nailed it. I use a AWS "yote" pack as well. I put the -14 inside a lightly padded zipper pouch, which nests inside the helmet. Now you have your own "hard shell" case to protect it. With the assault pack, you now have a complete support system, not only for your NV, but water, snacks, ammo, batts, etc. Totally self-contained with no extra baggage. If I'm actively using it, I leave the RhinoII mount on it, in the down position, with the J-arm staying on the unit. Sits great in the pack like that.
Kinda have to agree, it's a helmet; if it can't get banged around a little, what's the point. |
