A buddy of mine recently got out of reloading and I got a ton of gear for almost nothing. Included in the cache was 1000 of these 147 grain .30 cal FMJ bullets. They were loose in baggies and he had no info on them, having picked them up at an estate sale several years prior. They weigh in right at 147 grains but are significantly longer and fatter than the M80 pulls I usually use (M80 shown for reference). The don't show any pull marks and sem like they are factory fresh. They has a smooth cannelure, whereas the M80 has a grooved cannelure. Any ideas? Sorry for the terrible picture.

Any chance of sticking a magnet to one, maybe it has a big steal core.  https://www.google.com/#q=steel+core+308+bullets  looks like some on Google images

Looks like a Russian 147gr bullet from 7.62x54R.  Dunno for sure though, just a guess.

Never even crossed my mind to do the magnet test. Ten minutes ago I took a magnet off the fridge and BAM! It hit on that bullet like a south Chicago pimp. Steel cored without a doubt. Is it surplus of some kind? I've been using these for .300 Blackout. Would they be better in .308?

You already know the weight. Be sure to double check the diameter. Adjust OAL to suit the cartridge you are loading.

The cannelure doesn't have to line up with the case mouth.

Very good point Dryflash,

If they are Russian they will be .3105 not .308" If they are I would not load them for a .308" groove diameter firearm.

If they are .3105" don't be upset they will be good trade or sale items if you can't use them.

I checked the diameter when I first got them, they come in right at .307-.308".
I've already loaded a couple hundred of them in .300 Blackout and while they're not terribly accurate they shoot good enough for practice rounds.
Seating them right on the cannelure also gives a perfect OAL for AR mags, although Pmags need to have the rib taken down a bit for proper stacking..
