I recently picked up my grandfather's Mossberg 500. He had never fired it, and it was purchased around Christmas 2002. (The tag in the photo has the date as 2002.) I can tell from the markings that it is a 500a, yet I can't find any information to further identify it. First off, it has wood stock and pump, and it is a 2 3/4" + 3" 5+1.
Does anyone know whether this is a Persuader or a Cruiser, or did those distinctions exist back in 2002? Does anyone know if it has appreciated in value, maybe as a result of Mossberg offering primarily synthetic stocks? I paid $140 for it, so I think I did well, but if anyone knows more, I would gladly read about it. |

All I see are X
ETA - "Cruiser" is a 6-shot 18.5" or 8-shot 20" cylinder bore that came with a pistol grip, "Persuader" could be 8-shot 20" or 18.5" cylinder-bore 6-shot but was typically equipped with a fixed wood stock. Other than hunting guns, Mossberg also offers a line of military / security / police guns under names of "Persuader" (various riot-type guns with fixed stocks, cylinder-bored barrels of short to medium length) or "Cruiser" (pistol-gripped shotguns originally intended for storage in police cruiser cars).

Sorry about the photos - click on the link (here) to view the gun.
My problem is that the modern Mossbergs are all synthetic, making it impossible to value within the current stock of shotguns. It has a 28' barrel, as well. |

A Mossberg 500A is a Mossberg 500A is a Mossberg.
It's a modular design, there is no real difference between the wood stocked models and the synthetic stocked models except that the synthetic stocks do not break at the wrist the way the wood ones can. It's worth around $200. Maybe $225 since it has an accu-choked barrel. |
