London Fluid Steel leads me to believe that it is good for smokeless powder shells and probably 2-3/4".
Post a picture of the marking on the bottom of the barrels near the chamber end, the markings there should help to better ID it and tell if it is good for mokeless shells. From internet searching it could be a Cresent. Simmons (buttplate marking) is a hardware store that had shotguns 'made' for them by shotgun manufacturers. |

You can buy the shorter length shotgun shells still..and I would imagine that the gun could handle field loads in the 2.5" length if that's what it's chambered for...and the gun itself is decent mechanical condition.
I own an ancient Colt hammer-gun...has the fine twist Damascus barrels...and the chambers are really deep...like 3.5"....However..the barrels are thin at the muzzle..has some pitting in the bores..and I really don't want to burst a cool old collectors item. I consider it a non-shooter. I also own a Crescent firearms made 12ga. hammer double..it has 'Armory Steel' barrels(not Damascus/twist steel)..and is chambered deep enough for 2 3/4" modern shells to unfold. I do shoot it with field loads. Probably shouldn't..but I do.
