I have been given a 1903 Colt pistol that has some light rust on the slide.

What is the best way to remove it without destroying it's value?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Try using fine steel wool and oil.  Rub lightly.

That's my plan.

However, I've read conflicting opinions about oiled vs dry "sanding " with 0000 steel wool.

Sounds like whichever method is used, you need to keep the removed rust cleaned away very frequently.

I'm leaning to the dry method with a steady ammount of compressed air.

Never, ever use steel wool "dry" unless you're starting a fire with it. A lack of oil is what caused the rust in the first place. In any case, bronze wool will be safer for the bluing. Steel wool will scratch it, even if it's not visible to the naked eye. Soak it in Kroil or another good penetrating oil for a week and then buff it good with denim or bronze wool.

After that, keep it oiled at wipe fingerprints off of it. Don't keep it in a holster or a gun case (especially a foam-lined one).  If you get all the rust off of it it won't rust any worse than plain steel.

989,

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No steel wool!!!  You will take the finish off with the rust!!

Take a brass cartidge case and pound the open end flat to a knife edge.  This will be your scraper.  The brass is harder than the rust and will scrape it off, but the brass is softer than the steel and the blue finish on it and will not harm it.

Use lots of oil and scrape away.

NO STEEL WOOL!
