I recently ordered a 590 thru my favorite gun shop, but I've yet to pick it up because I just got married and it wasn't in before I left town for the honeymoon. But its the 590A1 I'm guessing, I am not intimately familiar with this shotgun, but I had a Maverick Model 88 when I was younger and I wanted a tactical shotgun and figured it'd be pretty similar to the 88 of the past. Anyway, when I pick it up, I'm just thinking of some of the upgrades I can do to bulletproof this gun. 1. Magazine Springs. I've seen where some members were talking about the magazine springs from Mossberg not being of the best quality, any favorites in that sense of manufacturers. 2. Magazine followers. I seen where Vang Comp has a machined stainless follower. Has anyone used this or have any other that they've used and had good luck with. 3. Stocks. I guess the stock uh, stock is a 14" LOP and be it that I dont have the gun yet, I'd think 14" is a bit too long and I'm liking the look of the Hogue overmold stock, but do they come in any sizes but the 12" youth stock? Also the Speedfeed stock, does anyone have opinions on those and do they have any custom lengths aside from stock length? 4. Light Mounts. Does anyone have a good light mount they use on this type of shotgun, or does alot of people use the Surefire Fore end? Is there a good clamp on mount to the barrel/magazine tube? Any insight here is appreciated, I've not seen too much on lights here. 5. Side Saddles. Between the Mesa tactical and the Tac Star side saddle, is it worth paying the extra 30 dollars for the Mesa where a Tac Star can do the same thing? Mixed reviews here? If there is any other suggestions/needed components for this that I'm not listing here... Any help and suggestions here are appreciated fellas. Thanks Brandon |
Brownells also has other manufacturers' parts available for these two items. I haven;t run into a problem with mine yet, but I've only got a few thousand rounds through them.
They make "LE" versions of both their regular and pistol grip stocks that are meant for use with body armor. Just my $0.02... don't bother with a PG stock on a Mossy - it renders the top mount safety unusable while in a firing hold.
See Borwnell's again for some ideas. I'm still fleshing out exactly what I want so I haven't mounted one yet.
Mesa hands down. The Tac Stars have had failure issues in the field. Pay the extra couple of bucks.
Make sure your shotty has a metal saftey knob. If it doesn't, get one. |
There was a thread on 10-8 Forums about Mossey mag springs rusting and failing early. General opinion seemed to be Wolff had the best replacement springs for the mossberg. |
In what way have you seen a tacstar fail? I've seen the little screws that hold the shell plate on back out if they were not properly tightend down. Other than that they seem to work very well IME. |
| Congrats on the vows. I ordered a 590A1 (51663) on 3/27/08, hasnt shown up yet at my local place. I hope your luck is better than mine. I assumed Mossy's new production of leverguns somehow slowed my arrival. Just a guess. $445.19 otd, if it ever comes in the door. Mesa saddle and hogue 12" lop stock for me. |

Yea, mine is also the 51663 and its sitting at the gunshop waiting for me to get there and claim it. I def. paid more for mine than you did yours, but all the ones I found on the internet after shipping and the ffl transfer fee would have been more than mine. I paid $505 for mine Are you going to go with the complete Hogue kit or just the 12" stock? |
I have reports from reliable sources that the plastic formulation used in the TacStar will start to lose retention in high heat conditions - IIRC specifically shotguns in dash rack mounts in a large metropolitan sheriff's department in the SW US. YMMV - if you're not gonna expose your shotty to wamer temps you may be fine. |
I havent seen that happen and we have several hundred of them in use in southern California patrol cars. Plus if you store the shells brass up like the best trainers recommend neither the mesa or tacstar will ever have a shell fall out. For gamers that load brass down i suppose it could be an issue. |
