So here's what I'm looking to create:
12guage round without a projectile that upon discharging will create something similar to a shock wave. I'm looking for an effect similar to a loud bass that you can feel in your chest (a big THUMP). doesn't have to be too loud. The round doesn't have to be 2.75" it could be shorter so you can load more of it in a pump action shotgun. The round will not be used for self defense, crowd control, defensive or offensive scenario. I considered blanks but they don't give me the sound effect I'm looking for. I'm new to the reloading scene so take it easy on me. |

A big shock wave will be accompanied by a loud report; there's no way around this. You won't be able to get the "thump" effect unless you shoot someone at close range. That means they'll also get hit with what ever over powder wad is in the shell; as usual, don't point the firearm at anyone you don't intend to kill.

Well, that is interesting. How about a dust bomb? Ignited by mixing titanium filings in the powder. A simple card wad should be sufficent. For the dust, it would have to be VERY FINE. Lycopodium spore powder fits the bill.
For the titanium powder, simple filings are good enough. Only 5% of the powder charge is necessary, I have made special effects blanks in .45 ACP using 4 grains of Bullseye with .25 grain of titanium powder, topped with tissue paper packed in the case. Makes a shower of sparks. Test with flour as lycopodium is expensive. It probably won't crack but it should flame good. The lycopodium will burn much faster, possibly giving a good thump. Do NOT try this with any organic peroxide as they are shock sensitive. Yes, benzoyl peroxide will make spectacular explosions. But it has enough oxygen to detonate in the barrel. It is used to make Hollywood-style explosions. But in a firearm, lycopodium spore powder is only a fuel and it will not detonate in the barrel, it has to be mixed with air to burn and that is does, RAPIDLY. But too much propellent charge and the cloud will be dispersed, too little propellent and it won't be dispersed enough. The titanium gives a shower of sparks that will ignite the lycopodium and possbily flour. Lycopodium spore powder is used for fingerprint dusting as it doesn't clump and is VERY FINE, about 10 times as fine as white flour. |

ALS Technologies Bore Thunder comes to mind. It is a 2" shell that kicks like a heavy duck load but has NO Projectile. We used it as a focused flash bang kinda thing. Break out a window on a raid and shoot them at the roof to deny access to a room etc.
The first time I shot them, the peeled the chrome/nickle lining out of the barrel of my BRAND new Marine Magnum but that made it easier to send to Vang Comp.
