I need a watch that can take a beating, that I can use to go diving as well..any advices ? so far  I'm looking at the Luminox Navy seals series 1.

I trashed a luminox a few years ago on the feed tray cover of a Ma Duece... I think most posters are gonna reccomend a Casio G-shock. I stick to the cheapies as I have yet to find a Bullet proof watch. and that sucks cause I really like the expensive dive type Chronagraphs.

If you want old school style go with a seiko self winding diver. Tadgear has a modified one that looks real nice. www.tadgear.com

The Casio GW300-1A is available for around $72 at Wally World.  Atomic, solar, can do everything you need it to.

+1 this is the watch that I currently own, it is a tank. The atomic timekeeping is awesome and extremely accurate and the solar battery is great. It is water resistant to 200 meters and extremely tough. I am a pretty active person and I have definitely given this watch a beating but it keeps askin' for more. The damn thing still looks brand new and I have whacked my wrist into walls, rocks, cars, sidewalks, trees and any number of other stupid everyday things. I am a G-Shock owner for life, although the new 5.11 tactical watch looks extremely cool.

I have had G shocks for years and they take a beating. I currently have a G shock Giez and lovt the look BUT it takes 4 batteries and has to be sent back to casio and for $40 they will put new batteries, seal and pressure check it. When I get a little money ahead i am going to but one of the G shcok solars. I still have my first g shock I wore it daily for nearly 15 years. Paid like $35 for it. I think that is
a good value.

Go for the issue Marathon Navigators.  They have the tritium face like the Luminox and are pretty well made.  These are the real deal, mine is marked US Government, the newer ones are not.
Usually get them for $100 - $150 on ebay.

Good luck.

i have a Luminox, Suunto Vector, G Shock DW6600 and Submariner. Luminox is the model your looking at, i don't recommend the watch, i just had it repaired( the casing broke) and have read and heard the same from others. for the money you can't beat a G Shock, however the features on a Suunto are worth the extra coin and the Rolex will take a good beating and a great dive watch but i own it for the Bling Factor.

Another vote for Seiko,

I have a Seiko Automatic diving watch rated to 150 meters. It's self winding not the less expensive quartz version, which is still a very good watch but I don't like anything battery powered......... just to old school I guess. This watch use to be standard issue to the SEALS way back in the day.

Anyway it's a tank and will take anything you can dish out short of using it for a hammer. Mine is 20, yes 20 years old and still runs like a top. I've had it cleaned twice in that time, once around 10 years ago and for the second time this year. The watch guy said it was one of the best watches ever made and should go for 10 more years, though he advised they get cleaned/lubed more often than that to keep them in top shape.

They are cheaper than a Rolex, but are not cheap. 20 years ago I bought mine on sale for $225. I'd say today they are probably in the $300-350 range, but worth every penny. People used to inherit granddads pocket watch, yours will inherit your Seiko.

This watch did take a beating, and it still works fine.  It held up better than I did at the time.

The G-Shocks are great watches - just wish they came with longer bands.

Luminox = blech!  Seen and heard of too many probs.

My recommendation:  Seiko or G-Shock.

I was searching for a new watch before coming here - nothing special - found a Swiss Army at the BX - just checking them out.  And of course, the band is too short.

Rolex Submariner

I hate to say it, but the Rolex is the only one that will not only hold up under pressure, but won't lose it's value either.  Every other watch is a disposable.  Whatever you buy your rolex for, you'll be able to sell it for the same amount 10, 20, or 30 years from now. (inflation not factored into the equation)

Personally, I use the Platinum Yachtmaster and no matter how hard I bang it up, it still looks stunning and new.  It's the most reliable watch I've owned.  I've only taken it off a few times in about 5 years and it holds it's time perfectly.  No batteries at all.

Here's my Luminox, its a Titanium model that was worked over by the sharper image. The only difference is the dial has numerals instead of the factory markings.

I do a lot of chainsaw work, and wood chopping, and the shock hasn't caused any problems yet. I've had the watch about 2 and a half years. I did break one of the band pins, but that was easily fixed.
Its a nice looking watch, and extremely light weight. I picked it up for 270 brand new.
The tritium is brighter than hell and looks sharp. I wear it daily, and the thing looks like new still.

I have had my Luminox Navy Seals with the Carbon case for going on 5 years and with the exception of batteries have had no problems.  I am hard on watches.  This is the longest I have ever owned a watch and this puppy is still going strong with out a problem.  My wife has one and she loves her's as well.  I highly recomend them to anyone in need of a good watch.

+1 on the Rolex Submariner, I've had mine 7 years now, keeps time to the second, built like a tank, still looks virtually new even though I wear it every day.  It's actually worth a tad more now than I paid for it.

Unfortunately, buying one will set you back a little over 4 grand.  Worth it though.

Hi, My name is blitz and I'm a watchaholic.......

My Fav Watches tend to rotate between:
1)Rolex Submariner(No Date)
2)Seiko Auto diver with a MOD face from Bill Yao at MKII watches on a NATO strap
3)G-Shock

If you really want a watch with Tritium vials on the hands/face, I would go with the Marathon G series navigators or a Stainless cased one. both can be found on Ebay or from Howard Marx at http://www.westcoastime.com/. They are issue and don't have the "Navy Seals" emblazoned on the face.

YMMV

You know, I gotta give it up for the Luminox...I have had one for probably 7 or 8 years, never take it off (hardly ever anyway). Replaced batteries once, strap once, bezel markings are worn clean off. It has taken a beating, but still works great.

I love the tritium hands and dots. I used to travel a LOT, and a lot of times the hotel rooms didn't have clocks, it was nice to be able to see the time all the time. I love it in the dark....I would buy one again....

Try Casio's speciality watches.  There's one with pressure sensitive detector.  Awesome.  The Luminox Navy Seal is too expensive for what its worth.

I have had my Casio G-Shock for 10 years now.  The batteries have been replaced.  The guy who fixed it said that it is now no longer as water resistant as before, due to his opening the back, but I haven't had a problem with water damaging it.  The alarm and other sounds are not as audible as before.  But 10 yrs, I can't complain.  This is one tough watch.
