We have the discussion around here quite often around the "you can build it shorter, but not longer" theory in regards to the specs on the Form 1.

During one of the discussions in the last couple months, somebody posted a letter/email from Gary S @ ATF stating the length was the best guess, and if it turned out shorter or longer you could simply let the ATF know. The terms are common to a lot of threads, so I'm not having any luck finding it by searching.

Anybody happen to have the link saved? I can't remember if it was a scan of the email/letter, or simply a copy & paste.

Exactly. I was in that thread, just recently, and would have provided an actual stamped letter showing their acceptance of a silencer I amended to a longer length. No one spoke up so I didn't post it

The ATF addresses a length increase w/ this statement:
"Increasing the length of the outer tube significantly affects the performance of the silencer and results in the "making" of a new silencer"

The FAQ's are addressing a repair or replacement. The silencer in our scenario has yet to be made and, as such, wouldn't constitute a repair or replacement.

Here's an approved Form 1 for a 15in silencer

Here's an acknowledged amendment, to this same form, for a length increase of 3"
