Anyone out there give it a go with the new Hodgdon for Hornady superformance powder?  I'm looking at picking up a can for some testing, spring's around the corner and that means bearable conditions again for spending the whole day out at the range working out loads.   Powder Valley has it in stock.

I can get 1 - 1.5" groups at 100yds with their factory loaded 308 superformance 168gr GMX, which is around what I can do with Fed 168gr GMM out of my 16" LaRue OBR.  1.5" is a good group for my skill level, I know the rifle and ammo can do better.

Plan on working up some similar GMX & AMAX loads, seeing if anyone has tried it / recommends it / meets the higher velocity hype, etc before I find out on my own.

.308 isn't one of the cartridges that they've done testing on and the people at Hornady and Hodgdon are very adamant about not 'experimenting' with any cartridges that they haven't lab tested already.  The Hornady/Hodgdon Superformance canister power isn't the stuff in the 308 Superformance ammo, BTW.

According to Hodgdon's site it is the same powder. http://www.hodgdon.com/new_prod.html They haven't released the 308 load data yet from what I've seen, either on Hodgdon's site or in the new 8th Ed Hornady manual.  However I had planned on pulling down some of my factory loaded 165gr cartridges, calculating a mean charge from that sample, reducing it appropriately and experimenting with similar weight projectiles like my Sierra MatchKings or Lapua scenars...not to mention duplicating the Hornady factory load for less $. Certainly nothing dangerous or cosmic about it.  I've done that before for powder/bullet combos.  Prudence and caution are at the forefront, naturally.

Curious to see if anyone else has done any experimentation or even has had hands on the powder.

Superformance

Here's some info.  I don't think it is the same powder, but I can't say one way or the other.  Just reading comments from people speaking to Hornady and people shooting for Hornady.

One fellow states that Hornady has 30 different 'blends' for their Superformance ammo.

Well, thats from sniper's hide, gotta consider the source with that one.  That site could possibly be the one place with more conjecture and opinion than arfcom.  Nevertheless, it's nothing more than an idea on my part at this time and I'm still curious to see if anyone has actually tried it.  Can't see where anyone has, or provided any hard data- its only opinions about "this" or "that" or "bandwagon."  Not even any feedback about published loads like the 243.  So that leads me to believe alot of those internet postings aren't worth the electrons that created them.

OK.

I'm just trying to pass along things I've read that you might have missed.

Two of those fellows in the thread I linked, one being the moderator of the Precision Rifles forum here, shoot for the Hornady sponsored rifle team, IIRC, so I'll give their 'warnings' some deference.

As I'm fond of telling others..."it's your face" so do what makes you happy.

Take care, Chris

If it is the same exact powder, why would they need to due further testing for the 308? Why not just publish the same load that Hornady sells as ammunition?  Might be a different powder after all.

It's all good.  I'm not trying to stir anything up, just seeking some honest feedback/info from anyone who's actually tried the stuff.

I have not worked with superformance but I have used their double based H100V.  I notice on the online Hodgdon burn rate chart, the superformance is slower burning that the H100V, which is relatively slow itself compared to most .308 Win or 7.62 x 51 powders.   All that to say, the superformance might be a "magnum" powder.  What I found out with H100V was that one could not get enough of it in the .308 win case to run a .308 bullet at any appreciable speed.  For the magnum configurations (low caliber & high case volume... even the .243 which is the 6mm in a .308 case), H100V worked very well.
