I need some gunsmithing advice. I just received an original 1910-1920 Oberndorf Mauser that I bought on GB. It did not come from the factory with any mounts for a scope. A previous owner at some point had it tapped and it came to me with an old Weaver scope from the 40s mounted on it. When I removed the scope and its bases to look for engravings, I saw that the rear of the two screw holes for the front base had been drilled through receiver ring. The front hole is less than 0.25" deep. The holes for the rear mount are both drilled all the way though as well. Is this ok? Is it safe to shoot with the hole fully drilled up front? I only have a day or two to contest this sale and I don't want a $1000 paper weight. Can you all give me some advice?

That really puts me at ease that I did not lose a $1K on a lemon or have to try and argue this out with an 83 year old man 1500 miles away.
