I seen some 185 gr. FMJ hollow base .45 auto bullet for sale and I would like to know if these require any special consideration when loading? It would seem that having a hollow bullet would creat lower pressure then a regular FMJ.

Thanks

link? I have seen some with cupped bases, but never a true hollow base, as in a 38 spec 148gr type hollow base. I am curious.

In 38s, you just need to be careful to push them too fast (will ring barrel, or so I was told coming up).

I have loaded thousands of Berry's Plated HBRN 185 gr (Hollow base round nose).  No issues, just work up your loads.

Could be the hollow base is to make the bullet longer and help with proper feeding.

I have run into feeding issues with short 185 gr JHP's in 45 ACP.

No problems feeding cast 185 gr SWC's in my 45's.

I wouldn't think any special techniques would be needed to load them.

THIS.  If it's the Berry's hollow base we are talking about they are designed to be loaded to the same length as a regular 230 would be.  I like them for that reason alone.

Here's my theory:  When the bullet fires, the pressure causes the base to spread out filling the bore ( there is a fancy term for this . . . something like obdulation?), thus getting a better fit so no gas escapes and the rifleing grabs and spins the bullet better also.

Now having said that . . . my pet load with Berry's 185gr Hollow Base Round Nose is using 6.9gr of True Blue.  I use the same OAL as in my 230gr RN . . . 1.260.  This load hase given me good function, mild recoil, and excellent accuracy in my 1911's.  I don't have a chronograph, so I don't know what the bullet speed is . . .

something like obdulation?), t

obturation, from Obturate.   Not to be confused with "obdurate" which means pig-headed or stubborn.

Berry's 185 gr hbrn is meant to feed like 230 gr hardball. The weight reduction occurs inside base. Great basting round, not the most accurate bullet I load. Have loaded tens of thousands of this brand bullet.
