Arrived home from hunting Thursday night. Had a great time. Shot a one hundred pound pig. Saw several bucks but there was a 15" spread requirement and all but one were too small. The one that was big enough was chased by a pack of dogs from another group hunting near by. I fired three shots but missed. You can't swing your rifle from one of those tri-pod stands, kept banging the barrel against the uprights. Mike.

Sounds like a good time Mike.
A couple of questions.
You are allowed to hunt deer with a dog in SC? Up here any dogs found running in the woods during deer season stand a good chance of getting whacked if there is evidence they are chasing deer.
How do the powers that be expect you to accurately measure the spread of a bucks antlers from your tree stand?
What happens if you shoot one and his spread is less then 15" ?

Striker, Three things are legal in S.C that are illegal in N.Y., baiting, buckshot and running deer with dogs.

The camp that I was staying at was not running dogs, we were on stands, a buck being chased by another hunting group on another section of land wandered by just by chance.

The camp I was hunting on requires a 15" spread, not all of S.C.. The one I shot at was big, I did not have to put a tape on him.

When you enter camp you sign an aggrement, 100 dollars for each inch under 15. They have a good idea at this camp, no shooting from the ground, only from elevated stands. I guess if you had 12 guys you did not know show up at your house each week with centerfire rifles you would be carefull too. This camp does not offer dog hunts but the guides told us that the locals all belong to dog clubs and run their packs on Wensday and Saturday. During dog hunts all shooters use buckshot for saftey. I do not think this is a law, just a custom.

The name of the camp is Roblynsneck, it is on the web. The food and accomadations were fantastic and the price not bad, 1300 for three days. I will return for sure. MIKE.

Cool. Very awesome.
A few weeks back, my stepdad and I went dove hunting (actually it was about 6 weeks ago). This place was actually in the middle of the city. As in an interstate about 300 yards behind us. We could see the highway about 1500 feet away. Anyways, there was this small lake about 500 feet in front of where we were, I told my stepdad, "Hey man, I'm going to go over to that pond and see if I can't stir any action up for us. He's like, "Okay. Just don't be long." With that, I leave. I'm slowly moving as to not suprise myself by stirring anything unexpectedly. I get about 200 feet away (within sight of the pond). I rounded this small little corner, and I'm looking at a buck with at least 13 points and a 20 inch spread up top. I count the points, there's 13 there. Too bad bowhunting season just opened a few days ago and this was a month and a half ago. We have a picture. It's just the fact that you need to know the thing was there. It was huge. The thing that really astounded me was that I was wearing a pair of black pants and a red shirt. I was thinking, "Why aren't you gone?"
