How do I go about getting a rifle from CMP? I'm NOT a member or anything. I never been to CMP either. I don't want to arrive there and have to go through some big process or whatever, not that it would really bother me cause I'd be even more pissed if driving 3 hours to CMP and I had to go all the way home to do some shit back home in order to join CMP. So what do I gotta do? I am a total novice.

FAQs on the CMP website.  Read them.

Call them if you have questions.  I did a couple times and had no problem getting through.  I think you can email them too.

Go there you wont be disappointed! I drove 6hrs one way and spent another 6 in the store picking out my for M1 carbine and my 3rd garand. The staff there is amazingly helpful. Plus you can pick one that is what you want. It takes probably about 20min for the paperwork. Its picking the rifle you want that takes HOURS!

Before you make the drive to one of the CMP stores, check out the CMP forum because they have a 2 dedicated sub-forums for each store and people report what's available at the store so you have some idea of what's there.

General link to forum:

CMP North Store:

Hope this helps and good luck.

So I can do ALL the paper work there that is necessary? Even though I have zero afflication with them or any gun club/association?

The following url has all of the requirements for purchase; the store will have a notary available. To cover the requirement of membership in an affiliated organization you can join the Garand Collectors Association.

I think the VFW and Am Legion are affiliates.  By your name I'm guessing you're a vet.

Read the requirements on the website
You must first be able to fullfill the elidgability requirements, THEN you can fill out the paperwork at one of the stores for purchase

If you are a member of AL or VFW (I suggest it for any vet) just take your membership card and all the other stuff with you. I suggest a drive down to the store....saves on fees and you get to pick  your own. Need any other help send me a IM.....I am a short drive from the North store.

I'm not a member of VFW or any veteran groups.

As stated on CMP website you will need to be a affiliated club member. You can sign up there for  the M1 Collectors club $14.00 for a whole year unlike the GCA which is $25.00 and runs from Sept- Sept. You will also need proof of firearms activity.
If you are a Veteran you are good to go.  All explained on the website

You can join the Garand Collectors Association there for 25 bucks.  You will need a second form of ID like a birth certificate or passport.  The marksmanship requirment can be met with a concealed handgun permit/license or an Appleseed certificate.

Make sure you take plenty of cash, or have a high limit on your credit card.  Here's what happened to me when I went out to buy one Garand on my first visit.

You could join the M14RA (Rifle Association). Details can be found on the M14tfl.com website. I'd strongly urge anyone interested in M14/M1a rifles and Garands check us out. Going the Association cost 25 a year Jan to Jan, but satisfies the criteria to buy from the CMP. Registering to the forum is free. Good info...

Looks like an interesting site. I'd be more inclined to spend time there if they didn't have that stupid audio crap playing as soon as you load their page
