How much play is ok between the upper and lower receiver?  Mine seems to have a small amount of play and I can see daylight at the back where they meet.  Not much mind you, but enough to notice.

What brand of upper?

What make of lower and cond?

What is the clearance between the aft end of upper and the standing breech of the lower? (measure with feeler gauge)

Have you tried another lower to test lockup?

Due to the design of the interface between the upper/lower there should be no movement.

I suspected but wanted to be sure. Their rec's have a less than stellar rep regarding tolerances...

And yes that would not be unusual to have play in a Enterprise gun.

There should be no movement whatsoever...remember remeber the front sight is on the upper and the rear sight one the lower thus play could interfere with accuracy.  i have owned my FAL for about 17 years now, had broken bolts, broken gas tubes, jams, double fires, etc but no movement, i also have held 40 years old FALs owned by armed forces of some particular countries (they treat them like shit) and there was no movement. I dunno i'd have it checked just to be sure.

I thought play would be taken up by the rec. locking detent.

Are you talking vertical play between upper and lower or horizontal? If vertical, your locking body could be worn. Or if it has a horizontal takedown latch, the latch could be bottoming out on the pistol grip and not allowing the locking body to fully engage the tang on the upper.

If horizontal play is evident at the rear of the receivers what I do is peen the upper edge of the sides of the lower slightly to eliminate the side to side slop. When the rifle is closed up you can't see where it's been done, it's covered by the sides of the upper. HTH

It is verticle play, very tight horizontally and I do have a horizontal latch.  It is bottoming out on the US pistol grip.  Perhaps if I relieve the pistol grip slightly?

Yep, that's what I've had to do before. If the latch is bottoming out on the pg, then the frame lock is not allowed to totally engage the tang on the upper as it should. Just relieve the pg until you can feel a little play in the latch when the weapon is closed up. Then you know the frame lock is engaged as much as it can be. I'd be willing to bet that cures your problem. HTH-

ETA: Hunter is right, you should feel no play whatsover between upper and lower if everything is fitted properly. These rifles aren't mouse guns
