Is there a sort of "how to thread" about the best way to purchase NFA items out of state from individuals?

Form 1 = self explanatory and no risk involved
Form 3 = self explanatory and little to no risk involved
Form 4 = you're on your own before it reaches your SOT FFL and there is a lot of risk involved

I've read about dealers even getting scammed for tens of thousands of dollars by unscrupulous "sellers"... so it seems that if even dealers get scammed, the average individual has a higher likelihood of risk involved.

What are some suggestions on how to proceed with high dollar form 4 deals with sellers out of state?

I have yet to have problems buying NFA items through dealers or face to face with individuals in state, but by avoiding out of state individuals I am limiting myself to a smaller market with possibly higher costs.

TL;DR
I don't want to get scammed by someone selling NFA items, how do you guys do it and what suggestions can you give?

Here are some ideas:

Ask for reputable referrals.
Pay with a credit card (if you can).
Do a 50/50 payment.
Ask for a copy of their Form 4 and DL before sending money.
Ask them to bring the item to a reputable dealer in that town for inspection (ask on the hometown forum)
Look at the item in person before buying (if you can).
Buy locally or from established dealers (but it may mean paying more).
Pray.

Its tough. You can get screwed like anything else you buy from the net or out of state. I've bought a couple of MG's out of state, and gotten lucky with all of my buys. Don't think just because its supposed to come via a form 3 that you are good to go. There are lots of dealers that are less then honest.

If I was going to drop $10k or more on a RLL, HK sear, etc., I'd spend an extra couple hundred bucks to fly out and inspect he weapon.

That is never a bad idea either. I've had a couple of sellers offer to let me shoot it if I wanted to go see them. Might as well do that as it is alot of money.

How about putting the payment minus a deposit and the first tax into a non interest bearing escrow account to be released to the seller upon approval of the form 3 and shipping details?

I did this with my mortgage payments when my mortgage company screwed me around about a couple k that I was supposed to have received after I settled. I set the account up to be released to them after I had received the funds and the check had cleared.

I was fortunate and bought my M16 RR from a gentleman who only lived about 45mins from me.  I got to inspect the weapon and shoot it before I purchased it.

One sure way is to buy from a reputable dealer.  You will pay a little bit more, but sometimes it is worth it.
