I'm trying to trade for a rifle my dad got a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful Mauser action with reciever sights and a nice walnut stock, no Bubba work here. Only thing is there are no caliber markings on the replacement barrel. I figure I can guage the barrel for bullet diameter but any way of telling the casing used.

My worries are that it is a wildcat barrel installed by a smith.

If you have no markings or anything to go on, you can make a casting of the chamber.

Might as well slug the barrel while you're at it. Maybe more accurate than your guage.

This is a true case of when you absolutely need to 'Get Both'.

You'll want to slug it for the caliber and cast it for the case size.
