Anyone ever use are have one of these? I want to get a 243 for my nephew and the howa seems to be a bit more in my budget. I dont want to get him a turd of a gun but some thing that I can get to shoot before I give it to him for his 12th b day.

They are excellent rifles, I have two.  My .270 Win is a damn tack driver.  They take Remington 700 scope bases, are very well machined, one piece bolt, have a Sako extractor, and adj. trigger.

Tossup between them & Savage over which is the best buy for the $$$$. I'd prefer a Howa over a Remington, quite frankly.

I'd agree with that....

I wouldn't go THAT far, though....

great rifles, been looking at them myself.  i believe Howa actually makes or DID make the Weatherby Vanguards.  if i'm not mistaken on some of the Vanguards it is stamped "Made by Howa for Weatherby" or something of the likes.

I have had a HOWA .270 for about 5 years now.  Like the previous poster said, it is a tack driver, regardless of the ammo I put into it.  I prefer it over my Win Mod 70 pre 64 .264 Win Mag.  Howa did make barrels for Weatherby, but not just the Vanguard though.  For the money, I would get the Howa all day long.

Howa has been making these rifles for many years and have had a good reputation.

I bought a Howa made Weatherby Vanguard last fall. It's all I thought it would be. A very nice rifle at a decent price.

Ok, I will give breakdown of the Howa.

Reciever: It is forged and is extremely well machined - it is machined on state of the art CNC machinery, the bottom is flat  and has a large integral recoil lug like a Model 70.    The scope bases are drilled to accept Remington bases.  They are also on the left rear side of the reciever to accept Redfield sights.

Bolt and handle are made for a single piece of steel, don't have to worry about having the handle snap off due to the brazing breaking.  It is a push-feed design that has a Sako-type extractor, that you don't have to worry about breaking (not that the Remingtons really do), and has a plunger type ejector.  The bolt also has a anti-bind feature that makes the bolt operate very smoothly.

Safety, it is almost identical to the Remington.

Trigger is adj., adjusting it voids the warranty.  My older Howa after shooting it hundreds of times has become extremely smooth.  It breaks around 4 pounds but many who I let squeeze think it feels even less.  The .270  that I have breaks just a bit higher but has not been shot nearly as many times to help break it in.

Stocks, I have one with a walnut stock and the .270 has a Bell & Carlson stock in realtree (the whole rifle is in Realtree).

I will post pics in a minute of my .270 Win that is in Realtree.  You will note the 6x Leupold scope on top.  I got the Rifle and Scope for $350!!!  I had come home on leave back in 92 and visited my favorite gun dealer.  He told me I oughta pick up this Howa as it had my name on it, I still wasn't committed at that point, then he said I will throw on the Leupold and the whole package for $350.  I immediately opened my wallet.

Here is my Howa .270 Win.
