After 30 years of suspecting my M1 needed a new barrel, I broke down and ordered one. It's a Criterion from CMP. Now, the question is, who should I send it to for installation. I have no idea who has a reasonable cost and reasonable turn-around time. |

Level(s) to check barrel/receiver index. Or, find a local forum member that has all that and probably get it done for a case of beer. |

If you’re in middle TN(or willing to ship it), I’ve done a number of M1 rebarrels for guys that shoot matches with their rifles. I bought all the tooling to do a few builds for myself. Then I did a rifle for a buddy, and it went from there. M1 rifles I rebarreled took 1st and 3rd place at the local year end vintage military match last year. I actually enjoy working on M1s. |

I will almost certainly need to ship the action and barrel to have it worked on. What restrictions are there on shipping firearms for repairs, if any? Who will ship it (UPS, USPS, FedEx,...)? Does recipient have to be an FFL? What is the likely shipping cost? How should I pack it? ETA - All these seemingly annoying questions are one of the reasons I have not previously done this. It's a pain in the ass. I'd almost rather rebarrel it myself. |

Usps will probably be the cheapest. Use pirateship.com it will probably be around 30$ It doesn't have to go through a ffl on your end but if they are a Smith they would have a ffl. |

| Caveat emptor with USPS. I just wrapped up a 1 month ordeal shipping a barreled FAL upper cross country. It went missing after my local PO took possession. After filing a lost package search request, 2 weeks after shipping, the package miraculously appeared after a month, at the post office in the city it was shipped to. No tracking anywhere in between. |

Those are some scary stories, guys. Are they anomalies or business as usual these days? An alternative approach is to DIY it. I haven't thought about this in a long time. Help refresh my memory. I own a barrel vise and several levels. I have what I need for headspace gauges. I'd need to buy a receiver wrench and I'd have to buy/rent a chamber reamer. What else do I need? |

Cutting oil. I'm not endorsing or recommending it, but I've seen people use a large adjustable wrench in lieu of a purpose built receiver wrench to rebarrel a Garand. 4D Reamer Rentals and Elk Ridge Reamer Rentals are two places I'm aware of that rent. No personal experience with either. |

I have shipped hundreds of packages over the years and have had one that was not delivered. I think it was, but the person who I shipped it to claimed it wasn't. |

Protect the receiver with paper grocery bag material or something similar. |
