| This is a powder that is little discussed. Any of you have loads esp for the 55 gr FMJBT and what results? How about IMR3031. |

4895 is an extremely versatile powder. I can use it in most of my rifles. I'm assuimg that you're wanting to possibly use it for .223? You're probably not going to get good results with this powder because IIRC it's a slower burning powder for heavier bullets. I do not have any manual in front of me. I use AA2200 for my .223's ETA: Welcome to the board |
| IMR 4895 works fine for .223, but it's prone to bridge because of it's large kernel size. I use it a lot for .30-06 and .308 but it's sometimes a pain to get into small case necks. For .223/5.56, I prefer a ball powder or an extruded powder with smaller kernels like RE 15. |

I like it for .223. Out of my NM RRA, 22.5 gr gives me my best groups with 77 gr Nosler CC or Sierra MK's. And it's #2 in accuracy for 69's and 80's, with Re-15 just edging it out. Once I get the chance, I'm going to see how it does with 52 SMK's, as H4895 gave me some decent groups with those, also.
But this is all for match loadings that I trickle up to, not blasting ammo. I use H335 and WC844 for my 55 FMJ blasting stuff. |

Quoted: This is a powder that is little discussed. Any of you have loads esp for the 55 gr FMJBT and what results? How about IMR3031. For loading 223, you are correct, as there are much better choices. Short cut extruded powders like IMR-8208 and Re-15 measure much better and give great accuracy. Ball powders measure the best. Tac, CFE 223, AR Comp, H-335, AA-2230, BLC2, and W-748 are all great ball powders for loading 223. You can load IMR-4895 and IMR-3031 in 223, it's just more work for no gain in accuracy. By more work I mean having to throw a charge and trickle up to the proper charge. The other powders I mentioned can be thrown directly into the case from a powder measure after measure is set and checked. Welcome to the reloading Forum. Spend some time reading the FAQ's and Tutorials at the top of the page. Some great info up there. |
| I have used a bunch of IMR-4895 and a bunch of surplus 4895, in 308, 30-06, and in 223. Never had an issue with powder bridging, and never let the few kernels that got cut with the powder measure bother me. I prefer IMR-4064 for both 308 and 30-06 but for 223 it works fine. Wish I could still buy the surplus for $60/8#. |
| Thanks guys and for the welcome. I have used 4895 for my 308 with excellent results. I have used 46.6 grns IMR 4064 and a vanilla flavored Hornady 150 spire point (#3031) to drop many a mule deer for forty years. Never let me down if I put the round in the vitals. so - I'll stick with the H335 and maybe try some other powders reccomended for my new S&W MP15. so far a flawess operating piece. |
