Friend of mine offered to sell me his SW-5 this week at a price I could not refuse. Based on the serial number, I think it was manufactured in 2001. Could someone please explain to me, for sure, how to tell if the reciever is cast or milled?

In the future I plan to change the current trigger assembly, which is stamped metal with a plastic pistol grip, to one of the all plastic ones. I have no interest in a auto configuration, and want to keep it pretty standard. I'm just looking to upgrade the parts to newer versions that have less wear.

Even with my other AKs, Glock, Mini-14s, etc. I have been waiting a long time for this gun Stephen

Cast or milled?

It's either cast or stamped.

Then the one I have is cast. I have experience with AK type recievers and can ID a stamped one pretty easily...this SW-5's reciever is much thicker than any stamped AK I have ever seen.

That's exactly the look I'm going for. Great looking rifle.

Did the SW5FS come with the short barrel or did it have the longer barrel like my SW5?

Also your trigger group looks to be one of the all composite ones, which is probably the biggest modification I'm looking to make to my rifle. Also just noticed that it looks like you have a paddle mag release, did you do that yourself or have it done at a professional gunsmith?

Once again great looking rifle,

After 3 hours of cleaning this morning, I'm finally ready to put an image up of my new gun. Didn't think I was ever going to get all of the powder residue from around the chamber.

Lower is a SEF pack.  Gun came that way from SW. Looks a lot better then the metal lowers I think.

It came with the short barrel. Once getting my from 1 back I removed the fake can.

the gun came from the factory with the paddle mag release.

The gun is a boat load of fun

Who makes SW-5s?

Bobcat just started making some a year or two ago, but it looks like they aren't making them in the above configurations any more.

Can you still get these new?  Both look awesome, I'm jealous.

Edited for clarification..

Special Weapons LLC doesn't make the SW-5 any more. A good site, but kinda out of date, that goes over all of the HK clones is:

www.hkweaponsystems.com/clones/clone.html

What this page doesn't go over is a couple of new manufacturers. Bobcat Weapons is making the BW-5 which looks identical to the SW-5 I have. Their website is:

www.bobcatweapons.com/html_pages/products.html

I have no expereince with Bobcat Weapons, so I can't offer any advice on the quality of these weapons.

I just bought a Bobcat Weapons BW89 PDW and I am very pleased with the gun. It is better than I suspected and very reliable even with the Chinese MP5 magazines that Bobcat does NOT recommend.  I have shot around 900 rounds of factory ammo through it without a jamb so far. Excellent gun.

Update on my SW-5...

I replaced the lower with a 0-1 plastic lower which included a Williams trigger job. Ended up having to switch out the ejector arm due to ejection issues, but after that I have a good ~4lb trigger break and I like the look of the plastic lower better than the stamped one.

Took my SW-5 to the range yesterday and ran 3 kinds of 9mm through it...
1) Winchester White Box 9mm FMJ 115gr
2) Speer Target 9mm FMJ 115gr
3) Federal 9mm Hydra-Shock JHP 135gr

Shot multiple targets at 30ft & 50ft. Had no feed problems with the FMJ rounds, but the last round of the Hydra-Shock jammed the rifle. No biggie, I just fed it FMJ instead. I'll dignose the problem later. I was amazed by the groups the rifle was holding...about 2.5" at 50ft. Ended up tearing the center out of every target I used he
Broke out the Break Free CLP and went to town. 2.5 hours later it was finally clean.

Can't wait to take it to the range again!

Yes the roller locking system is dirty. I think if you have any sort of muzzle attachment that could increase back preasure it is probably worse.
