Still some folks running .222 Remington Magnum.  Most reload now.  Back before the .223 we had .222 and .222 Magnum.  Not sure why they had to do .223 for the AR instead of just adopting the magnum as is.

Bit of a relic from the sixites.  Back then the 222 Rem, 222 Rem Mag, and 223 were all battling in the market place.  Ultimately the 223 won.  There are guns out there chambered for it, seems to still have a niche in countries that don't allow military calibers.

I googled it and it appears there is still a manufacturer of 222 magnum rifles in Montana.  But I am just gonna prop them up in here

and look at them.  I have some old cardboard shotgun shells around here somewhere as well.

The wife got it for me.  She came out to Cali a month before me and when I got here it was hanging on the door  I will ask her.

The guys I grew up down the street from had one.

I'd never heard of .222 before they brought it up.

Funny, my neighbor just gave me a .222 Rem. It''s a Remington 722 but it's busted and needs to go in for recall.

I believe they had to make a "new" round in order to run it at higher pressures.  I believe the .222 was a 50,000 psi round and that the .223 is a 60,000 psi round.  More modern propellants and rifles.

The .222 Remington Magnum is the Parent Cartridge for the .204 Ruger.

The 722 Remington in .222  was the most accurate rifle that I have ever owned.  Even with factory ammo 100 yard groups were one hole.   Sold it and bought my Super Bull .223 AR with an additional .204 upper.

.  The guy that bought my .222 still  coyote hunts with it and has killed over 200 Yotes.

I hear that the ammo is hard to come by now.

The .222 Magnum is a straight case with no taper.  .  .  Seem to remember that the .222 & .222 Magnum had some issues with the straight case having some extraction problems due to cases sticking in the chamber.   The .223 is a tapered case and did not have these "sticking" issues....Also the .222 would not meet the military specs for penetration on a military helmet at 500 meters, so they built the .223/556...
