It would be stamped/rollmarked on the receiver. Even if it's not, it's still a good buy.

BTW, Imbel made receivers for Springfield when they were making their SAR-48's (FAL's)
They are good quality.

Is there a date on the inside of the mag well?

If so you can tell it's a parts gun as aposed to a factory built gun.

Why the M444 question.  Are they especially good?

druid,  No special reason. I saw them advertised in SGN years ago, but only for a little while but the price was really good. Haven't senn an M444 advertised since.

444's were built in Tx for IAI...(Israeli Arms Itl.)..........They used ALL Imbel parts for these (except for required US parts). Overall, they were good builds, I had one, and had to remove the Hesse "recoil intensifier" they called a muzzlebrake and replace it with a US made FSE flashhider.
Some had more 'wore out' kit parts than others...they refinished them to look good. 444's were marked "model 444", "Houston, Tx" or something like that.

If the receiver only has Imbel markings, it means nothing, thats just who made the receiver...it could be a Century build, a garage build, etc.....Century built on Imbel receivers for years....my first FAL was a Century on Imbel R1A1 that started my whole addiction....wish I kept that one.
The date stamp on the mag well doesn't say much, except what year it was imported as a "RECEIVER"....Century was an importer, as well as a builder (some use that term lightly)....so they imported the receiver, then built on it.
I have 3 FAL's that were built by ARS...they have mag well dates also...but he got them from various importers.
Count/look for obvious US parts.
