Hey all, I am new to the FAL scene...haven't bought one yet, but am thinking about it. My local GS has an L1A1 on his rack that caught my eye.

Reading the "Do's and Dont's column", I am wondering what the difference between the inch/metric mags are. And If I were to buy it, how would I know what after market mags (surplus) I should get?

I value your information to keep me from making an expensive mistake.

I could explain it all to you, but just check out the link below. It'll save me (and you) a lot of time

Get a metric rifle as the magazines are dozens of times more plentiful and therefore a bit cheaper.

My local GS gets his L1A1's from SOG.
Does anybody know the quality of these rifles?

I know I'm a newbie, but I can't afford to make a major purchase (to me it's major) and regret it later.

I believe the SOG guns are th Century rifles.

The trick here is basically "how good is your gun shop?"

If the rifles works, all well and good, if you buy it and it doesn't run right, what will they do? If they'll keep exchanging rifles with SOG until you get one that works to your satisfaction, go for it.

If they sell it to you and you're on your own, be careful.  If you get a bad CIA gun it's usually not to difficult to fix yourself (unless it's a barrel timing issue), but it could cost a few bucks.
