I just bought a DSA rail system for my STG58, but realized installation is a bit more permanent than I thought. It hadn't occurred to me that I would need to use some tin snips to remove the handguard retainer. This would effectively make the rail the only option for handguards in the future, with no switching back and forth if I ever want to.

If I cut this ring off, is there any way I can get regular handguards back on in the future?

You can get a DSA two-piece handguard retainer that will go on the barrel without removing it.  It's a favorite of builders who realize they've forgotten the retaining ring while screwing on the barrel.

Just forget about it and send me the rails for disposal.

Perfect, that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks!

What part do you have to remove? Is it he tin ring that holds the hand guards back by the receiver?

If so how does the rail stay in place?

It's machined to be such a snug fit that it doesn't need a retainer.

I've been able to remove the gas block before on several of my rifles.

That will allow you to replace the handguard ring without seperating the barrel from the receiver.

Your experience may vary.  Some gas blocks are on very tight and some folks are wouldn't dream of even doing it.

I'd rather mark and remove the bbl than muck with the gas block.
