Looks like a Garand KB of sorts, although it looks hinky to me, the oprod/receiver/bolt is usually whats involved. I am thinking this Garand had more problems than just the wrong ammo. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1298894_.html&page=2&sr=0 |

Something is not right with the story. No pics of the top of the action. Where is the mainspring? It would have to be OOB or a hell of an overload.
John Garand designed that action to be almost indestructable...the case is completely contained and enclosed by the bolt and the barrel. |

John Garand designed that action to be almost ALMOST indestructable...the case is ALMOST completely contained and enclosed by the bolt and the barrel. The Garands Achilles Heel has always been how badly it handles a case head failure and the resulting flow of gas directed downward . Depending on the severity it can be just getting a new stock and trigger group or if it is a really bad overpressure round the bolt will crack the recvr heel and or crack the safety bridge ruining the recvr. Even a round properly loaded to Grand specs will do this to a Garand if the case head cracks. |

I couldn't read all the way to the end because of all the people who are commenting who don't seem to know what they are talking about. One post I did read said that the op rod was bent. I'm assuming that it was bent from the forward end and not from the chamber end when the gas was directed downwards.
No way that was an in-spec 30-06 loading, unless there was a barrel obstruction or an OOB. I'm putting my money on pistol powder overload due to the report of the ammo being "gun show reload" and the report of the op rod being bent. I can't see how the op rod would become bent if the case head simply cracked or if the round was just on the "hot" side in the garand. In spec 30-06 ammo won't do this to a garand, even if loaded with a non-garand safe 30-06 powder, unless something else was going on (like OOB, pistol powder reload, ect). I would have to think that a 30-06 round would have to have a PSI of 80K+ to do that sort of damage on it's own without some other factor. |

FWIW around 2003-2004 there was a large influx of Korean M2 surplus. Didn't take long before reports started popping up about cracked necks, split sides, and the worst...cracked heads. Researching my notes from then indicates that PS headstamps seemed to have most of the issues. I don't have pics saved (archives went thru several PC changes) but I recall some mag wells blown out especially when heads cracked.
Who knows what this new Garand owner bought. For all we know he bought overcharged reloads in Korean M2 PS cases. |
