I think that I ought to introduce myself. I'm probably going to bother folks soon with questions, so I might as well get formalities out of the way. I've kept telling myself that I need to get into reloading, but never got around to it. Well, today, I decided to stop procrastinating. $40 for a box of .45 +p HSTs made me go .
I have a pile of Lake City brass that I've been saving, and figured it would be a good place to start. So today I ordered the Lee Reloader press, a universal depriming die, a primer swager, some extra depriming pins, and a primer pocket cleaner. I also ordered a 4-die carbide .45 ACP set, so I can get started on the .45 brass that I have saved up. Yeah, I know that the Lee Reloader press isn't terribly strong, but it should at least do as a depriming/swaging station, and should keep be busy for at least a little bit, before I have to buy more equipment and supplies... |

First off, welcome! There are lots of wise and helpful people on this forum. The resource threads at the top of the forum are very informative and chock full of info. The RCBS swaging tool you have coming works (it's what I use) but has some quirks. A small dab of case lube applied to the "spud" in the press ram will help release the case once swaged. The rod will need adjusted for each brand of case but since you have a bunch of LC, you will only need to adjust once. This tool is kinda hard on a press. Hopefully you bought the cast iron one.

The RCBS swaging tool you have coming works... I'm getting confused. With all due respect, I must be overlooking where he mentioned a RCBS swaging tool. OP, did you buying a swaging tool or a reaming tool? If you bought a swaging tool, which one? jonblack |

OP, did you buying a swaging tool or a reaming tool? If you bought a swaging tool, which one? Thanks to all for the kind words. I ordered the RCBS primer swager combo. The press that I ordered is the Lee Reloader, which I think is aluminum. A friend of mine has a Dillon press that he hasn't used in five years, and said that he's going to let me take it on indefinite load... but he's been pretty slow getting that to happen. So, being impatient, I ordered a universal depriming die, some pins, the swager, some shell holders, a 4-die carbide .45 ACP set that was on sale, and the press. My thought was that I can at least get started on the depriming and swaging. If the press holds up, terrific, if not... it was only $25. If he doesn't come through, I'm going to order a cast iron press for sure. |

welcome aboard!
The aluminum lee presses wouldn't be on my buy list but for pistol casings and carbide dies I doubt you'll stress that press any at all. Now if you were trying to size 7.62mm machine gun brass in a small base die with hornady one shot lube then I'd easily foresee you breaking the press frame. |
