| I don't have any optics. How many of you guys do not own any optics at all for your AR's ? |
| I do have a scope on mine, but I have the see-thru mount, so I can still use my irons! I actually prefer the iron sights (It's the Marine in me), but I do like to scope to be able to look down range quickly. I can shoot very well with the iron sights, and I guess that's why I like them so much. It's a little more of a challenge also! |

I've got more optics than I have AR-15s. Optics Junkie, I guess. - RRA 16" M4 LEGP w/OKO - BM 16" carbine w/Reflex II 12.5 moa triangle - BM 20" gov't profile lightweight w/compact ACOG - BM 24" Vmatch w/10x Super Sniper-M spare BSA scope lieing around collecting dust. |
| I just picked up a red dot for one of my AR's a couple of weeks ago. I got it just to try out and I realized I don't own one rifle with a scope on it. I usually am not willing to trust any optics on my rifles, to many chances for a critical failure when it could really matter. |

I used to be a die hard iron sights kind of guy. Not that I didn't check out lots of optics, always looking for an "edge". But found none that changed my mind. Until...... I got my compact ACOG. Don't get me wrong I think a person should be good with irons. But man, that ACOG is awesome. It's FAST and is great in low or no light conditions. Of course it's got see through sights for the irons and is on a fixed carry handle. Just in case. Got to have the back up for sure. For those with just irons I have one question. How would you shoot at night/low light conditions? Barring nightvision of course. Do those tritium sights work that well? |
Same as on my M15A2. Congrats on a wise purchasing decision- you made a good choice. Great gun, great accessories, great customer service at ArmaLite. (No, I'm not getting paid for saying this :^) ) Optics: I checked out a Trijicon ACOG yesterday on an acquaintance's Bushy- looks pretty interesting, but since I am used to shooting offhand w/iron sights (100 yds. or so), I find scopes tend to make the image dance around too much. Others will have diff. experiences, but for what I do, I'll stick to iron sights for now. |
Thats interesting. I only have irons becuase I'm poor, LOL. But I am quite good with my irons. I will get optics someday. |
| I still have phenomenal vision and only use irons. I'd like an ACOG but its hard to justify the cost when I can buy another rifle for less. Maybe two. You guys know how that is: there's always another rifle. There've been plenty of times I've told my wife, "I think I've got enough rifles, now I'll buy some accessories." We all know how that turns out. |
| I have 2 M4gery's here and use Aimpoint ML2 with irons as backup on the A2 and EOtech with irons as backup on the flat top. Irons should always be the way to learn the basics of shootiing but with todays optics making target aquisition and follow up shots so much easier and faster its the state of the art way to go. |
There's also a little thing called "trigger control" that figures in the equation. |

1 1903a3 - Iron 1 M1 Garand - Iron 1 M1 Carbine - iron 1 M1A - Iron 1 20" HBAR AR - Iron 1 16" HBAR AR - Iron Still need a m1917 (looking for a good shooter) I'm just a service rifle kind of guy I guess. However, 1 4-14 56mm govt style scope coming for the M1A (Turning into my longer range configured rifle, also useful if I ever want to shoot Bambi). Future plans include a holo sight on the 16" which is turning into my tactical carbine. It's nice to have so many toys... Ray |
and women as well! edited add, i'm not opposed to iron sights but i don't feel that there's as much challenge with a scoped rifle. i mean, get a 1" group from a scoped rifle and you're on par. but getting a 1" group with iron sights means you really have to know how to sight it. let's face it, even moving your cheek forward or backward an inch can make a difference in your sight picture. the variability of that alone makes shooting with irons more of a challenge. |

I don't have optics on any of my 5 ARs. I simply don't feel that the type of shooting I typically do necessitates or justifies the added expense of optical sights. I am able to consistently hit the type of targets I tend to shoot at out to 300+ yards with open A2 sights. I would eventually like to mount a 4x scope on one of my 7.62x39 AR carbines to use for hunting, but it just isn't that much of priority. If I ever get around to putting together a long, heavy barreled varmint AR, I'd be sure to drop some coin for some serious glass, though. |
