I have a strong desire for an Israeli Mauser. I know Century's got 'em but my boss at the gun shop I work for said he saw them last time he visited Century and said they were "dog crap". I almost don't care about condition (definitely don't want them refinished) cause this'd probably be the only gun I'll never shoot. This I'd own for the historical significance.
Anyone know where I might be able to find one? Don't really wanna spend more than $250-$300. Thanks. |

I purchased one not too long ago. It was missing the front sight blade and hood, the stock has been repaired once and the gun looked used up from the outside. I took it out of the stock, cleaned all the metal and the bore (which I could barely see through from deposits) and cleaned the loose dirt and other debris from the stock. The metal turned out to be in good condition with some minor pitting that was there before the IDF refinished it. The bore has some slight pitting in it, but it's shoot-able. The action is nice and tight, mine is a 1939 factory 42 Mod. 98 receiver with an FN bolt. I replaced the firing pin, sear and bolt shroud lock springs and it shoots alright. I sighted it in after fitting a new front sight and it seems to be grouping within 3 inches or so.
Depending on what you can get one for, it might be worth it. I got mine for $149 plus shipping and FFL transfer. |
| Well I want one no matter what, which is why I'm tempted to just get Century's dog crap one. I'm Jewish and have visited Israel and have friends that are current and former soldiers there and I'm a very proud Zionist which is why I want one in the first place, so I'm willing to take what I can get. I'm just looking for a person/place that might have one in better condition than "dog crap". |

Well, you can check out gunbroker, that's where I purchased mine. If you spent up to the $200 mark I bet you could find a decent one. All of these got sold off to various other countries after Israel stopped using them, so the condition of most out now will vary from ok to terrible. I think a good bit of them went to Guatemala.
I don't know about posting auction links here, but if I were interested I'd get on gunbroker and search for 308 k98 or 7.62 k98 and see what comes up. |

Yeah...saw a few that weren't terrible on GB. Just also wanted to see what else the hive mind recommended. A friend of mine has a good one. He won't own a rifle unless it shoots great. If all you are looking for is a wall hanger you should be able to find a shot-out one for $125 or so. |
