Okay I finally did  it  I ordered a STG58stdp,  I have handled a few FALs  at few gunshops,  I recentled held an Israeli clone and loved the comfort, and look of the wood and steel handguard...
So, my question is can I easily put an Izzy handguard on my new FAL?

There are two types of Israeli handguards, those made for a light barrel rifle, and those made for a heavy barrel. The light barrel ones will swap out on your rifle with no troubles.  The heavy barrel ones can be made to work with some bending, dremmel work, and force fitting.

Unfortunately light barrel handguards are harder to find, and your best bet is to watch equipment exchanges here and there for a set from an individual.  And if you do get a set, you will also have to get a pair of spacers that are installed on the gas tube.

Here are some borrowed pics of the differences between the two––

Light barrel, note there is no notch cut in round part

Heavy barrel, note the notch cut in the front of the wood (round part) for the carry handle

Sarco has the LB and HB Handguards and Spacers NIB. The LB ones are a lot more $$$.

Gunthings has the spacers listed at $8 instead of $18 but, only seem to have HB handguards.

IIRC most often LB guard were run w/two spacers and HB used one.

If your rifle has the short gas tube then you will not be able to use the spacers.
