Its my first. Its a Turkish Mauser. It says "Ankara" or something on it with a cresent. Is there anything I should be aware of with this type of Mauser? It is dated 1940.

Also, how do you get all this freaking Cosmoline off? The bore is packed with the stuff.

Best thing to disolve grease is mineral spirits.  It's a common type of paint thinner.  Very cheap and very good.  Use usual caution, i.e., no smoking, well ventilated area, etc.
You'll love the mauser!

There are many methods for cleaning up one of these old rifles.  It makes a big difference if you can do it outside.  Don't use mineral spirits inside the house.

Here's the URL of the unfinished Turkish Mauser disassembly page.

One secret is to use a blow dryer. Run the hot air through the barrel and just watch the cosmoline run out the end.

HINT Do NOT use your wifes favorite hair drier.

I haven't done the blow dryer thing but the first thing I do is dissamble my old rifles and take the barrel ass'y out then boil a nice large pot of HOT Boiling water and basically down the breach and all over the metal. This basically runs all the crap off the metal. Hint: don't touch the metal with bare hands while doing this After this ALL cosmoline should be gone off all metal. Don't forget to oil shortly after to protect metal.

A very good resource for ALL C&R weapons:
