Here's a good post on another forum about accurizing your K31:

I think I'll try some of that... probably releiving the stock around the front end to let the barrel float completely free.

Pierre of St. Marie fame says that relieving the stock to completely free float the barrel is a bad idea.  I've tried his trick of adding spacers to the barrel bands to take the immediate pressure off the barrel and have had good success.

That's true, he does recommend spacers to take the bind off the barrel.
But he only does this as an alternative to relieveing the wood on the
handguard.

The K31 and it's sniper variant, the ZfK55 sniper rifle use the same bedding                                                system on a very similar action.  The ZfK55 is set up with a free floated barrel
as standard configuration.

The reason the K31 is set up with the forestock and handguard compressing
on the barrel at the front band is to give the front of the rifle rigidity to handle the rigors of
mounting and using a bayonet with the rifle.  Not for any accuracy treatment.

The treatment given to the K31's in the article above does nothing but
systematically stabilize a very good bedding design.  The goal was
stabilization, not a new paradigm.     It works.

good shooting, dxr
