@weptek911, it's mostly ceremonial, but is also said to be a blood-catch to keep it from getting onto the handle:

Notch In a Khukuri
The notch in kukri had many traditional and practical purpose.

According to traditional belief, the notch near the handle of the blade is a Hindu fertility symbol. It is also the footprint of a cow. So the notch forbids slaughtering sacred animal such as cow with it. The Gurkhas also kept promises with it that they will never use this weapon on women and children.

Nevertheless, the knife being a lethal weapon, the notch on it is for the blood to drip off rather than running onto the handle, and thereby prevent the handle from becoming slippery, so the user can maintain his grip for further demonstration. The other most important thing about this is no other knife has this distinctive character in them and only kukri is the design where we can find notch.

Placed an order for multiple blades.

  • Four spurs as Christmas gifts for family.
  • A six inch Bhura. Reminds me of a khukuri-based bowie knife. I made a semi-custom request for a fingerguard.
  • A regent bowie knife.  Horn handle, C guard, copper hardware, standard grind, and satin finish.  I'm hoping it looks like this example, except with copper instead of brass, and a horn handle instead of micarta.

I realized I never got around to posting my MSI.

10.5 MSI, acid washed blade, brass accents, and medium sized black micarta handle.  Grinds and edge are beautiful, I really like the acid washed finish, and I'm very happy with the fit and retention of the Western Leather holster.

I haven't chopped or cut anything too substantial, just some small branches and shrubs to date, but this thing is a tank.

Really appreciated the update shots from Kailash as well.

Kailash Blades have reached the Rocky Mountains!

My Sirupate arrived this week and this morning I took pictures while walking in Provo Canyon.

The acid wash on the blade brought out the hamon line. I also went with the traditional rubbed-leather dap/sheath.

It feels absolutely amazing in the hand and is a work of art.

The sirupate or the spur?

I find the sirupate to be a great balance of weight and chopping power, especially if you're looking for a blade over 12" long.

The Spur is solid and will probably survive the apocalypse.  Terrific for tasks ranging from cutting food to making kindling to batoning to whittling.  It could benefit from some jimping where the thumb rests on the back of the blade.

Its colour can range from mirror silver, a bright, light grey through to a dull/dark grey depending on if it's polished, satin or acid washed.

Brass is the next strongest and it won't corrode aggressively but will gain a patina. It's lighter than steel. Its colour can range from a golden mirror through to a bright, light yellow or a bolder less reflective gold depending on if it's polished, satin or acid washed.

Copper is very close to brass but slightly easier to scratch, with a more orangey pinkish colour that's most notable when less reflective. It also has a wider range of possible patina colours including black, pink or even blue given certain conditions.

White metal is the softest of all our hardware- a similar metal to that used in silverware platters etc. It holds a brilliant polish and doesn't dull for years but can scratch easily and is best suited for display pieces/martial options.

All of our hardware is tough enough for use outdoors and we compensate for softer or more fragile materials by beefing up stock thickness in those circumstances.

Some pictures:
White metal (satin finish)
Polished brass
Copper including pins
steel

The Panawal should be a great, tough blade, For reference the blade you linked has an indian rosewood handle, brass hardware and satin finish.
Take care,
Andrew

My Kailash HSI arrived yesterday.  It is extremely light compared to my Himalayan Imports and KHHI blades.  Carrying will be better, we'll see how it chops.

I really like the micarta handle and the kydex sheath.  All of my other micarta handled knives have polished handles.  This one was left rough and the grip is
exceptional.  The sheath is a taco style without the open top like others.  My KHHI blades have the open top.  I like this one better.

I's not very sharp, but that's easily fixed.

Historical Service Issue (HSI) - 11.5"
•Blade Finish: Acid Wash
•Hardware: Brass $9
•Handle Material: Forest Camo Micarta Wrap $45
•Handle Length: Large (5.25")
•Sheath: Kydex $34
•Kydex Colour: Black
•Grind Type: Standard Grind
•Additional Sheaths?: No

Aesthetics or performance (feel)? I've got khukries with buffalo horn, wood, and now micarta. I really like the micarta for grip and it's inherently more robust. Horn is the most comfortable, but is a little too smooth with sweaty (no gloves) hands. Wood varies, but I have no issues other than I think micarta is more robust.

Dang it...you guys are a bad influence!  Just placed an order for a Mini and a 6" Bhura!

I have one I bought from Khotang Khukuri Handicraft a few years ago, plus a surplus military one with an pre-WWI date and "broad arrow" marking. (Let me know if anyone wants to see the other maker)

Yesterday I ordered two Spyderco knives with CPM blades.  That's well over $500 in blades in two days!
