IMHO, gutted 550 cord and a cheap S-biner is still about the best retention method there is if you're not also needing to add tension (which is difficult if not impossible to do with a single PVS-14 anyhow).
"Janky" is relative, we designed the PCM-MLOK because guys were getting pissed when I told them to use zip ties, but if it works...
The PCM at least actually improves on a zip tie by protecting the cable and functioning as a grip surface, though honestly they can be a pain in the ass to install if you have to reconfigure rifles and lasers and controls all the time for marketing, demos, and shows... first world problems, I know.
The thing about the paracord / S-biner solution, though, is IMHO, it's actually functionally superior to all of the more expensive aftermarket solutions out there, again, assuming you're not wanting a tension solution for binoculars. The paracord is not "springy" like shock cord / bungee cord, meaning that it will not send the goggle flying back toward your face if it gets caught on something / separates from the mounting system/helmet, and is strong enough to retain the goggle against most "typical" dumbassery, but the S-biner is weak enough that it can / will fail if there is enough force that might otherwise injure your head / neck, effectively serving as a built-in breakaway.
"Janky" is relative I suppose, personally I think a short loop of 550 cord attached to the shroud / helmet somewhere with a small "tail" on the goggle with an S-biner looks a lot less "janky" than piles of extra Velcro, zippers, "tactical pillows," and a mess of shock cord like high tension wires strung all over the place, but eye of the beholder and all...
