| So what's the difference? I loved my nagants so much I thought I would buy a couple of Mausers but have come across both large and small ring Mausers. They seem to be the same price so what's the difference? |
It usually has to do with the model of the mauser. If it is an M98 based mauser like the German 98k, GEW 98 or some of the Yugo mausers like the m48 and Czech 98/22, it is a large ring, in that the diameter of the receiver ring is...well... large. The Swedish M96 and M38, are small ring, as well as the early Turkish M93 mausers. Also the barrel shank(threaded part that screws into the receiver) is thinner. Now if you take a look at the Turkish M38, it has a large ring action, but uses a small shank barrel.![]() Large ring mausers are usually stronger and have the much safer 3-lug bolt and based on the M98 mauser action. You see these mostly in 8mm Mauser as it is more powerful and needs the stronger action. The small ring actions also can be found in 8mm mauser(not very safe with full power loads) as well as 7.65 argentine, 7mm mauser, and 6.5 Swedish. Small ring actions usually have 2-lug bolts, and have the earlier mauser actions(m93,m96 ect...) that do not handle escaping gasses from a ruptured case as well as the M98 action, which is very good at that and is a much safer action if a case lets go.
