I know black powder muzzle loaders are considered "not firearms" and most (if not all) laws pertaining to modern firearms do not apply to them.
But is there a line and if so where is it drawn. Situation: I have an old CVA Bobcat .50 caliber percussion sidelock that sits in a closet and never gets used. The Bobcat was a budget ML that had a synthetic stock (which I never liked) in the style of a traditional wood stock. I would like ditch the plastic, shorten the barrel to pistol length, and make new wood. I think it would be a fun project. I know that with modern firearms "once a rifle, always a rifle" but I don't believe that applies here. I just don't want to run afoul of some little obscure technicality. |

the best advice I can give you is to write the ATF tech branch and your state AG with that question (federally they maybe consider "non-firearms" but your state may say otherwise). I wouldn't follow any legal advice from a gun board on a questions like that. I don't believe that the defense of, "but, your honor, on the AR forum they told me that it is perfectly Ok to do that with my BP rifle", will fly. |

Blackpowder muzzle loading guns are not considered firearms, that is why you can buy them directly thru the mail from Cabelas, Bass Pro etc. Since they are not firearms they do NOT fall under the NFA. You can buy repro Colt revolvers with detachable shoulder stocks, Howda smooth bore pistols etc.
There have been many members on here that have posted pictures of their sawed off double barreled muzzle loading shotguns. |

You can do what you like to your gun . I have long wanted to buy a double shotgun and saw it down to ....handy length ...  cc Like ..... near nothing .
It is leagle , and I got a chance to shoot a BP 'Gottie Shottie' years ago . just plain nasty wicked . |

I'm on hunt for a simple project that I can do mostly at home, with as few machine shop sessions as possible. I'm still not totally "cleared" for macine work (although I've been cheating) and absolutely no welding (no cheating there, those three week naps suck!). I've already written off the Postal Shoot and cancelled all other cannon builds (got three on the board) until I get unconditionally cleared by the docs. The leftover section of .50 barrel might have some potential. Mini-RML?
