Use an engraver that works on guns for a living. I had an AR lower and an AK receiver that needed to be engraved. Posted in my hometown forum, and a member recommended a local engraver (about a mile from my house) for the job. Brought it in, described what I needed, they said it shouldn't be a problem. Got them back today, not happy. Both markings are VERY shallow. You can barely feel an impression when you run your finger over it. The markings on the AR are barely readable. But it gets worse. The marking on my AK receiver are upside down! |

About the minimum depth, I wouldnt worry about it. .003" is the thickness of paper and some people use laser marking for their NFA markings. AnvilArms will do it, I beleive gemtech does it on all their suppressors. I wouldnt worry about depth. Now, quality and orientation is another matter completely! |

I pay extra for the engraver to work while I wait so there are no mistakes, on top of the fact that you cannot leave an NFA weapon with anyone other than a gunsmith without NFA's ok! Most engravers I have dealt with don't even know what NFA is so they usually get wide eyed when I show them a piece of paper with a eagle on it along with what looks like an ASSUALT WEAPON and tell them I cannot leave the item with them and that the info on the paper is privileged information!!!! |
