I know I train to draw not activate a snap/button/etc.  However, during a SHTF I also don't plan to let anyone close enough to try to grab my gun.  But maybe I'm thinking of it and training wrong.

I have a Safariland 5188 now as my house/nightstand holster for my G17 w/TLR-1 and it works well.  I also have a 6004 for my G20 w/M3 but it also will fit my TLR-1.

I'm throwing around the idea of putting together a war belt and the first piece of gear I'd put on it is a holster.

Please share your thoughts and philosophy on the issue.

Thanks

People who openly display a firearm appear intimidating, far better to have a good concealed carry holster like a Milt Sparks inside the pants holster. If you are not a cop you dont need to set up your gear in that manner.  Scare other people too badly in a SHTF situation and they will shoot you from a distance with a rifle. Better to look friendly.  The majority of people out there are not overtly hostile, even in hard times.

You get a look at all the pics in the war belt thread??

I usually carry in my pocket with an AHolster (best pocket holster I've ever seen btw!!!) or a Sidearmor IWB (have a few of them for different guns).  I am all about concealment.

However, when it's time to fight/patrol/etc. I could care less of you see my pistol/rifle/etc.  This is what I'm referring to with this thread.

Thanks

Retention is an important part of any holster that's openly displayed. While you may not plan to let anyone close enough to grab your gun, the fact is that if the SHTF most of your plans will be out the window. As von Moltke said, "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy." You will invariably be physically close to someone at some point. You may need to trade, someone may sneak up on you, or dozens of other scenarios may conspire to put you in a situation where someone may be close enough to try to grab your gun.

Level III for me. I always used a Safariland SSIII.  I can draw from it just as fast as any other holster.

I'm a fan of the Safariland ALS.

Only concern I have with that is if dirt or debris could screw up the movement of the lever if it gets wedged in there somehow.  But the ALS is the model I'm leaning towards.

Thanks

If you google "Safariland ALS Failure" you will find info about the only known ALS failures I have ever heard of. Basically, the PD in Provo Utah experienced a failure rate of the ALS mechanism of just under 60% while performing a specific drill. The drill involved rolling around in 4-6" of loose pea gravel with the holster empty. Upon reholstering the weapon, many of the ALS mechanisms would not unlock and required specialized tools to remove the weapon.

It is important to note that neither the Provo PD nor Safariland were able to reproduce the failure with the weapon in the holster. Safariland's service bulletin on the matter can be found here.

Another vote for the Safariland ALS or SLS holsters. I'm slowly switching from the SERPA to the Safariland. The Safariland holsters actually help you establish a proper grip on the pistol, too.

Another vote for Safariland. Would get an ALS if they made it for my gun :(

The Agency I work for carry a ALS type holster and I love it.  For a war belt I would use one.  Concealed carry I use a open top Desantis Speed Scarab ...keeps the weapon tight to the body and helps with large frame weapons not showing as much.

I use an ALS holster for my war belt and love it.  Very easy to use and great retention.
