I LOVE shooting 44spl through my Levergun so I started going through my 44 brass and found 44mag greatly outnumbered my Spl cases. I have not reloaded for my 44's yet, just my 45 and 9's.

Anybody have a nice light load they use in magnum cases?

Please list what bullet or bullets you want to shoot. Lead or jacketed and weight too.

5 grains of unique will lob a chunk of lead safely out of a .44

A quick look at one manual shows 5.7gr Unique as a start load for the 240gr lead.

It also has 9.7gr Unique as a start load for the 240gr Jacketed. This "start load" is listed at 1100 f/s though and although it will be lighter recoiling than a full power load I wouldn't really call it mild.

For really light or low recoiling loads you will need to stay with lead or cast bullets. Or go to lighter jacketed bullets.

I have used other powders like Hodgdon Clays for some light cast loads too but not with a 240gr bullet. It was with 200gr cast bullets.

I don't have my log handy but I can say that I have had great success with both Unique and Blue Dot for light 44 loads.

If I want a light load in 44 mag with a standard primer and a cast 240 gr SWC in 44 mag cases I use;

6.0 grs Bullseye

Or 10 grs of Unique

Both of these are around 1000 fps.

I don't have my data handy, but I use titegroup with 200grain Lead bullets.  It is a light charge that keeps the velocity down.

IMR Trail Boss is pretty good for light loads.

TRAIL BOSS-

Trail Boss was designed specifically for low velocity lead bullets suitable for Cowboy Action shooting. It is primarily a pistol powder but has some application in rifles. It is based on a whole new technology that allows very high loading density, good flow through powder measures, stability in severe temperature variation, and, most importantly, additional safety to the handloader.

Here's the load data from the Hogdon Website:

I have been picking up the Winchester 246gr lead RN 44spl Cowboy action loads for it for the past few months. $40 a box but I can shoot them with no ear pro and its quieter than a 22. Granted they shoot almost a foot low at 100 yards. The girlfriend even chose the 44 lever action over an AR for the range trip. I am going to try my best to duplicate those.

Thanks for the data guys, looks like the JHP's I bought will be saved for magnum loads later. Time to start casting my own, haha.
