Looking for a short range varmit caliber that resists ricochet and over penetration. Will be used out to 150 yards on skunks, possums, foxs, weasels, crows etc. Already have a .22lr but, have seen a few of the rounds go through and kick up dust 75-80 yards down range. Thinking 17 HMR or????

17 HMR would be good for this (from what I've heard, I'm waiting on mine to get delivered right now). Very flat shooting, 17-20gr bullets aren't as likely to ricochet, V-Max bullets frag almost instantly for minimal penetration. What varmints will you be shooting?

I've had two 17s.  A savage 93 and a Browning T-bolt.  Sold the Savage to buy the Browning.  While the T-bolt is a MUCH nicer looking rifle, the Savage was much more accurate.  It would keep all brands of ammo inside a one inch circle at 50 yards, with the groups being around 1/2 to 3/4 inches.  The Browning will shoot only a little under an inch at 50, with some brands being totally outside the one inch bull.
If you're going for accuracy over beauty, definitely go for the Savage.  I've never seen one yet that wasn't scary accurate.  And as for performance on smaller critters, have NO worries about the performance!  It renders crows into big puffs of feathers.  Couldnt tell you about ricochets as I've never had one with this caliber.

22 hornet,

but you pretty much have to be a reloader to be able to afford to shoot one nowdays; factory ammo is Goddamned pricey

Hornady's new .17 Hornet looks promising. Are you planning on saving the pelts?

Yeah, I see that now
I was on my phone and replied after reading up the the "150 yards" part, now I see the rest. I wouldn't use a 17 on anything larger than a fox (or a coyote if he was close with an easy head shot)

Second the 22 Hornet and it being a good idea to be a reloader for that round.

I will throw in another vote for the Hornet, I had one a few years back. I reloaded 40gr Noslers and it turned out to be extremely accurate(I had read in magazines not to expect much in terms of accuracy) very light on recoil and it killed groundhogs like lightning out to about 150yds.

The HMR is perfect for the applications described by the OP.

The 17 gr vmax is nearly impossible to ricochet.
