Would changing the upper on a RLL host gun, while keeping the same bolt carrier, change the timing and require adjusting? Or is it swap and play?

It should be swap and play.

Always recommend doing a simple function check when changing any component or moving from one gun to the other. They should be the same but I did have an upper rear lug that had a very slight ridge on the back that changed timing, I filed it down to adjust.

Better to be safe than sorry

Definitely NOT swap and play.  The upper rear lug size is the key so getting all uppers measured and fitted first is critical.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.  Meant to say with fitted uppers, would timing change from one to another while still using the same bolt carrier?  Thanks!

It's the upper receivers take down lug that is the key to timing.  I run my LL between 4 or so different combinations of uppers and different lowers.  Some are dedicated and some aren't.

I've had one upper receiver that was too out of spec and I couldn't get it to run properly at all.  Out of the 4 hosts/uppers I have 3 different paddle sizes to run them.  Once you measure the gap and have paddles made, it's a breeze to swap between hosts.  Each host has spare paddles that I keep with the rifle.  If I'm going to swap the paddle out I simply remove the paddle and store it.  Get a new paddle from the new host and install everything and away it goes.

Edit:  I should add that I mostly shoot 9mm and only have one .223 setup that I shoot my rll in.  So I really don't have any experience with what you're asking about.  Again though, it's the relationship between the carrier and the rear lug that will determine the proper thickness of paddle for the link.  They're all not going to be the same.

Magoo,

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. And thanks to Quarterbore's site, I know how to check the timing.  So, where can I get the paddles with different thicknesses?

There's a couple different sources.  I've personally only used M60Joe.  He's a smith who does miracles with most things NFA.  Shoot him an E-Mail ([email protected]) with the sizes of paddles and whether you're using a KNS re-enforcer (if you don't have one you NEED to get one).

To measure, you'll need a feeler guage (aka gap wrench).  Insert a feeler gage between the rear lug on the upper receiver and the bolt face that comes in contact with the RLL Paddle.  This thickness plus .002" is what you should be using.

Awesome info!  I've read through all the Lightning Link threads here and on Uzi Talk's M16 forum and did not find that.

I don't have my Link yet.  The seller (a member here and on Uzi Talk) just mailed the Form 4 to transfer to my SOT last Friday.  So I have a few months to wait before I have it.  I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about 'em while I'm waiting.

Oh, and it is coming with the KNS protector, M60Joe's select fire kit, Colt SP1 BC, and a Bushy lower.  Pretty much a turn-key package except for the upper.

Thank you!!!

Good deal.  You'll love your RLL.  You just need to get set up with a couple different hosts and you're golden.  I've been looking at the 5.7 P90ish upper as well as getting a belt fed upper.  Brian at BRP says his XMG will work so I'll have to put him to the test...  As soon as I can save up for one.

Since you have to wait a little bit, you may as well get a 9mm project started.  M60Joe mods 9mm bolts to RLL specs also.  I've had to have mine drop shipped to him but he does a great job.

If you already have some AR's that you plan on using as hosts you can get more M16A2 FCGs and mod them your self to get a select fire FCG.  It's simple to do. You'll also want to make sure that your lowers can accept the RLL.  See the pictures on Joes site to see where he removes material to make room.  I went the other route and just used a dremel on mine...  It isn't pretty but no one is going to see the inside of my guns but me anyway.

This is a never-ending hobby

ETA:  A picture of what I was talking about above:

ETA II: The best part about RLLs and RDIAS; new lowers.  Take a look at Spikes Tactical.  They have nice pictogram markings for all 3 positions.  There are other companies that do this also but I'm only familiar with Spikes...  Shameless plug:

Sweet!  The Bushy lower I'm getting with the RLL is machined out like that in the pic.  Thanks again for the added info.
