Define modified mx-11769.

Mx-11769 tubes have pigtails and are manual gain, so it's hard to confuse the two. Are they in a PVS-14? It takes deliberate effort to manually set the gain in a MX-11769 and remove the pigtail because it requires soldering a resistor in its place.

On paper, the omni vii tubes should be better, but in terms of real world performance, they are about the same. Lets put it this way - i would take clean omni vi tubes over omni vii with slight blemishes.

That being said, you didn't get what you paid for, and I would ask why, because it actually will impact the resale value, because the specs for vi aren't quite as high as vii.

At the end of the day, it all depends on the price... It might still be a good deal, even with omni vi tubes.

What are they installed in? What kind of housing? This is incredibly vague. How do you know they are mx-11769 tubes?

the removed pigtails/resistor can be an OEM mod in commercial units. i dont know of any scams involving turning more valuable gain adjustable tubes into less valuable mx10160 format tubes.

This is kind of where I was going with this, too. Omni VI tubes aren't bad, and are sought after. Granted, the minimum specs for Omni VII are higher, but having the adjustable gain tube over non-adjustable is more desirable. You can always have pigtails added back on, if they are in manual gain housings, and then the manual gain features will work again. If they are PVS-14's, I would thank the seller for the free upgrade.

Chances are, someone wasn't out trying to screw you, or you'd have ended up with dead, non-gated, or omni III tubes.

With all this being said, Augee has his pigtails removed on his MX-11769's when he put them in his MOD-3, and he sounds happy with that setup, so I'm sure yours will be great.

I'd be curious to hear the rest of the details. If it was on the EE, the seller might not have known. People generally wouldn't know what tubes they have installed without cracking the device open, and then you need to send it somewhere to have it purged / collimated again.

I would rather have 11769 then 10160s

Hook that manual gain back up!

OMNI specs are minimums / maximums depending on parameter for a given contract.  There is nothing that prevents an individual tube from exceeding the minimum / maximum.  What matters is the specs on YOUR tube.
