Hey guys. I need a locking shoulder tool to figure out what shoulder size I need to order. I see they are 90$ on brownells. Is there a better price out there? Or a place to rent one? 90$ is an awfully high price to pay for a one time use tool.

I used pin gauges.

Is there a specific set you used?

Gunthings has their 10-pin set for $31.
Might as well get the headspace gauges while you're there, unless you already have them.

I have the HS gauges already as I borrowed them from a buddy. He also used to have the locking shoulder gauge but he lost it..

I know that you don't want to shell out a bunch of a dough, but I bought a set of Starrett hole gauges for ~$100. Much more versatile than pin gauges.

Yeah I really want to do this as cheap as possible as I don't plan on building any more FALs.

Ive used Plasti Gauge by FelPro. It's like thick dental floss. Use it between the locking shoulder and the bolt, then measure how much it was smashed down. Plasti Gauge is used to meassure the clearence betwwen the connecting rods and your crank shaft of an engine. Cost is @ 7.00-10.00

Drill bit shanks from a big set are handy for this.

I need to tackle this project as its taking up my bench. I will have look up and see What drill bit size is close to the "average" sized locking shoulders...

I have assembled a few FALs and the pin gauges from Gunthings worked for me.

You can tape around one to increase the diameter and then mic it. Remove the extractor and check with a GO gauge in the chamber. Ensure your chosen size won't close on a NO-GO gauge.
