I noticed that some of you have a open "U" shaped partition for your long guns which has notches around the perimeter.  Others have rows of notches allowing you to individually align the long guns.  Does either method have any pros or cons, or is it just user preference?  The only difference that I have noticed is the open "U" shape allows for easier in and out of the long guns.

I think you mean standard rack v. something like Study's "Easy out loop" Near bottom of page for rack options  I recall they had a better discription, but can't find it.
The racks tight together allow you to pack in a lot of guns, but hard to get them in/out (to take out one from the back you have to remove all the ones in front).  The more open pattern decreases the numnber of guns you can store, but easier to get them in and out.  Even with the open loop (which I have) it isn't real easy getting out a gun from the back.  Any nice guns, I would put in a gun sock for sure to protect the stock.

If you have a few guns that you use routinely, get the loop type.  If you just want to protect and store as many as possible, get the regular rack.  With Sturdy (and I'm sure others) if you don'[t use the shelves on one side, you could have both (racks on one side for long term storage of infrequently used guns and a loop to keep the guns you normally take out to shoot).
